9 am in BRYGGEN

I arrived early at the Fish Market of Bergen, Norway, eager to witness the scene before it fully came to life.  As I entered, the stalls lay empty, only with mountains of ice. Vendors were busy unpacking crates and setting up, preparing for the day ahead.

As the morning progressed, the market buzzed with activity, bustling with energy and movement. The air was filled with the aroma of freshly caught fish with a hint of saltwater.

Shortly thereafter the scene became so busy. Vendors proudly displayed their array of seafood, from plump salmon to cod, to even fresh fruits and vegetables. The vibrant colors contrasted nicely with the rustic wooden stalls and the backdrop of the colorful Bryggen buildings.

Engaging with the friendly fishermen and vendors, I learned about their fishing traditions and techniques passed down through generations. The most interesting fact was this market had been a thriving hub since the 1200s!

Sampling smoked salmon and various seafood delicacies offered a delightful insight into the culinary heritage of the region. Among the intriguing flavors, the Elk and Whale sausage stood out as a personal favorite.

In this bustling marketplace, I found not only a sense of community but also a profound connection to the sea. I spend quite a bit of time at sea myself, but today I saw another side of life at sea, which rendered my experience deeply enriching.
